Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam was born on Saturday, December 14, 1935 (Ramadan 17, 1354 AH) in a village called Sandhu Sayyidan, Rawalpindi, Pakistan. He was born to the great scholar of the time, Shaykh as-Sayyid Walayat 'Ali Shah al-Jilani. His genealogy connects to Sayyiduna al-Ghawth al-A'zam Shaykh as-Sayyid 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani in 22 links through his eldest son and first hereditary trustee, Sayyiduna Shaykh as-Sayyid 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Jilani. Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam is an al-Hasani wa l-Husayni Sayyid, meaning a lineal descent from both Sayyiduna Imam al-Hasan and Sayyiduna Imam al-Husayn.

In his quest for knowledge, Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam travelled all over the Indian subcontinent and Hijaz. Along with mastering the Islamic sciences, he completed his PhD and Bachelor of Laws degree. Delivering public sermons from a very young age, Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam speaks with an eloquent tongue combining a sweetness of expression with an acute sharpness of mind. In his delivery of religious and spiritual exhortation, he is charming, graceful, wittily amusing, full of good humour and polite in his shrewd observations. He exemplifies the qualities of chivalry and noble generosity which he inherits from his Pious Ancestors.

Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam came to England in the 1970s when the Ahl as-Sunnah wa l-Jama'ah did not have a big following in the UK. Whilst travelling up and down the country giving lectures, the noble Shaykh organised the first Mawlid an-Nabi procession in the UK. It has since been held every year, today attracting tens of thousands of people. Now residing in Walthamstow, North East London, Hadrat Mufakkir al-Islam regularly gives lectures all over England to his committed disciples.
